Moving Forward with the Hawkins Cove Restoration Project in Annapolis

Hawkins Cove Restoration Project UpdateThe next steps for the Hawkins Cove Restoration Project in Annapolis, Maryland involves further clean up and tree and shrub plantings. The contractor planting will take place over the course of a few weeks in mid March 2018.  The contractor planting will include wetland and forest floor vegetation, as well as trees and grasses. Once the contractor finishes the heavy work, supplemental planting will take place by volunteers and members of the HACA community. HACA community members will receive a stipend for their work. This opportunity will serve as a skills training program for the underserved community. Volunteers who would like to get involved can find information on the Spa Creek website and Facebook page.

The contractor left behind some tree stumps and limbs throughout the stream. This was done intentionally. The logs serve as a wildlife habitat for turtles, frogs, salamanders, and the like. However, the boards, applied as protection during construction, will be removed during the planting process.

Hawkins Cove Restoration Project Update

The City of Annapolis and its residents have expressed concern about a disconnection between the existing path from Eastport to Truxton Park. No bridge or stepping-stones were part of the restoration program. However, the conservancy agreed not to do anything that would prevent such a feature from being constructed in the future, and believes that it would be beneficial to the community and provides educational outreach.
