Rockfish in Spa Creek?

Home » News » Rockfish in Spa Creek?
July 23, 2017

The second seine of Summer 2017 revealed some very surprising results including young striped bass and white perch older than one year. The water, especially around Hawkins Cove, the area adjacent to the boat ramp, continues to have very high levels of suspended solids and often unsafe levels of enterococci which will make it difficult to sustain any life forms.

Biologist Simon Brown and a team of volunteers went to the boat ramp at Truxtun Park on July 21 and pulled in a 25 foot seine net.

The fish count was as follows:

Atlantic Menhaden 291
Atlantic Silverside 2
Banded Killifish 1
Gizzard Shad 1
Inland Silverside 8
Mummichog 3
Pumpkin Seed 1
Striped Bass (young-of-the-year) 10
Striped Killifish 5
White Perch (1+) 2
White Perch (young-of-the-year) 3
Blue Crab 3
Black Drum (juvenile) 1

In the video below Simon discussing the benefits of having fish in the creek that filter the water. Thanks to the Chesapeake Mermaid for the video.
