What does Burnell enjoy most about volunteering with Spa Creek Conservancy (SCC)?
Burnell loves being able to give back locally right in his own neighborhood. He enjoys meeting people and has made lots of friends over the years volunteering for Spa Creek. He also likes the physical activity of digging rain gardens or helping people setup oystercages on their docks. If there is a hard job to do – planting large trees, putting on waders for work in the creek, or carting boulders – Burnell’s your man. The harder the job, the better.
(with information provided from his wife Mary Lou and Amy Clements) Is there a favorite memory of an SCC event? Working with Mel on so many projects, but especially those around the Children’s Museum. Burnell was a very early volunteer with SCC and helped put in the Spa Creek Trail around the Museum. He planted, weeded, watered, picked up trash again and again in the Lincoln Drive rain garden. What motivates Burnell to keep coming back? Seeing the progress being made by SCC and hard work of volunteers makes it easy to keep coming back to help. What is your favorite place on Spa Creek? Burnell’s favorite place on Spa Creek is Amos Garrett Park. He was involved in getting it built, and then maintaining it over the years. It’s a beautiful place to sit and watch the activity on the creek. What does Burnell do when he’s not volunteering with SCC? After he retired and moved back to Annapolis, Burnell did a lot of volunteering with other organizations too. He was involved with Rebuilding Together (formerly known asChristmas in April), the Ward One Residents Association, Murray Hill Residents Association. Most of all he just loves helping people any way he can. |
